Kitchen cabinets in New Bern: reface or replace?

If your cabinet boxes are solid and the layout works, painting or refacing usually makes more sense than replacing. If the boxes have swollen, sagged or smell musty, replace them. In New Bern's damp climate, what the box is made of matters as much as how the door looks.

The problem

What failing cabinets look like here

Damp air is the main enemy of cabinets in eastern North Carolina. Walk your kitchen with a flashlight and look for these signs.

  • Swelling at the sink base. A bubbled or crumbling floor panel under the sink is the classic sign of particleboard that got wet.
  • Doors that stick in August and gap in January. Wood moves with the seasons. A little is normal. Doors that bind or will not close are not.
  • Peeling laminate or foil. Thin vinyl wraps let go at the edges near the range and the dishwasher.
  • A musty smell. If base cabinets smell damp, the cause may be under the floor. Find it before you install anything new.
  • Sagging shelves and loose hinges. Fixable on good boxes. On soft particleboard, the screws have nothing left to grip.

The options

Paint, reface or replace

All three can look good. The right answer depends on what is under the finish.

For scale, the midrange minor remodel in the 2025 Cost vs. Value report replaces doors and drawer fronts rather than whole cabinets and averages $28,458 with new counters, flooring and appliances included.

What to buy

Choosing cabinets for a humid climate

Ask about the box first. Plywood handles humidity and small leaks better than particleboard, and it holds screws longer. Budget lines often use particleboard for sides and floors. If that is what you are offered, ask for at least a plywood sink base, since that is where trouble starts.

Look at the back of the door. Five-piece doors, with a floating center panel, allow for wood movement. Solid slab doors in natural wood are more likely to warp. Painted doors can show a thin line at the joints as the seasons change. That is normal, not a defect, so ask how it is handled.

Finish every side. Raw edges soak up moisture. Ask that door edges, the back of the sink cabinet and any cut ends be sealed before installation.

Let the boxes settle in. Cabinets shipped from a dry warehouse should sit in the house for a few days with the air conditioning on before they are fitted. Ask your installer what the maker recommends.

Keep the house steady. Cabinet makers tend to tie their warranties to normal indoor conditions. Run the air conditioning or a dehumidifier during a long summer job, and do not leave a part-time home shut up and unconditioned.

Door styles

Styles that suit New Bern homes

  1. Inset

The door sits flush inside the frame. It suits Federal and Victorian homes downtown, costs more and needs careful fitting in humid weather.

  2. Shaker

A simple recessed panel that fits nearly any house, from Ghent bungalows to brick ranches in Trent Woods.

  3. Beadboard and glass

Fits older cottages and pantries. Glass fronts on a few uppers keep a small room from feeling closed in.

The job

How a cabinet job usually runs

A paint or reface job leaves your kitchen usable for much of the work and often takes days to a couple of weeks. Replacement takes longer, and the kitchen will be out of service for part of it. Stock cabinets may be available quickly. Semi-custom and custom lines add lead time, sometimes many weeks, so order before you set a start date.

Once cabinets are in, the counter fabricator measures on site, then cuts and installs the tops. That gap is the part of the job that most surprises people. Ask how long you will go without a counter and sink, and how to plan around it.

Ask for written pricing with the cabinet line named, box material spelled out and the install costs separated. If you compare two offers, compare those details and not just the total. Check the license and insurance of whoever you hire.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to reface or replace kitchen cabinets?

Refacing usually costs less, because the boxes stay and there is less demolition and rework. The saving disappears if the boxes are damaged or if you want a different layout, so have them checked first.

Can old solid wood cabinets be painted?

Often, yes, and in a historic home they may be worth keeping. In a house built before 1978, assume the old finish could contain lead until tested. Sanding it calls for lead-safe work practices.

What are the best cabinets for a humid coastal climate?

Look for plywood boxes, sealed edges, five-piece doors and solid hardware. A ducted range hood and steady air conditioning help just as much as the cabinet itself.

Do I need a permit to replace kitchen cabinets?

Swapping cabinets in the same place usually does not call for a building permit by itself. Moving plumbing or wiring is different. Check with your local office, since rules differ between New Bern, River Bend and Havelock.
